Damiana is a small shrub with aromatic herbs (smelling similar to chamomile) that is native to Mexico, Texas and central America, northern Caribbean and Namibia. It has a long tradition of use as an aphrodisiac that can be traced back to the Ancient Mayan of Central America. Its reputation is so well established that it is even reflected in the botanical name, Turnera aphrodisiaca. There is good anecdotal evidence that it deserves its reputation as a prosexual herb and when the Brazilian government reached 120 local remedies used as aphrodisiacs , Damiana was one of the only three selected for further study along with Catuaba and Muira Puama.
Its volatile, aromatic oils and beta-sitosterol have a stimulatory effect on sexual organs and a gentle, irritant effect on the urogenital tract to produce a local stimulant with tingling and throbbing sensations. Its alkaloids may also boost circulation to the genital area and increased sensitivity of nerve endings in the clitoris and the penis.
